It’s all about beans: German TV documentary about INCREASE out soon
We are happy to announce that on 19th of October 2024 at 21:45 CEST, the French-German TV channel ARTE features INCREASE and the Citizen Science Experiment in an hour-long documentary.
The production team nicely summarises its contents:
"Beans are true all-rounders: they connect generations and continents, symbolise home and tradition. They are good for the intestinal flora and for the climate.
This is why scientists are also focussing on the power legume. As part of a citizen science experiment, they are investigating which varieties are best able to cope with climate change in Europe. To this end, thousands of amateur gardeners in 27 European countries are growing different old varieties of the garden bean and are meticulously documenting growth, flowering time and yields. Dr Kerstin Neumann from the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research in Gatersleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, is leading this citizen science experiment, which should also lead to more bean diversity in gardens, fields and kitchens.
For Tiziana Tacchi in Chiusi in Tuscany, Italy, beans have always been part of the menu in her restaurant. They are also cooked by scientists in the south of France, who are studying the interaction between beans and maize in the field.
In the Rhineland, Germany, farmer Karl-Adolf Kremer favours the field bean as a sustainable and protein-rich crop. It enriches the soil with nitrogen, provides food for insects and farm animals and has great potential for human nutrition.
Primary school children in Köthensdorf, Saxony, Germany, are also discovering beans for themselves.
Capannori in Tuscany, Italy, is the destination for bean enthusiasts from all over Europe. They meet there and exchange ideas. This is how they save rare bean varieties from extinction.
Researchers at Martin Luther University in Halle/Saale, Germany, are working to improve the digestibility of pulses - to the delight of all those who enjoy a plant-based diet.
There's no question that beans are on trend and on everyone's lips!"
The documentary promises to be an entertaining and educational watch. It will already be available through the ARTE website (in German and French) from 12th of October 2024: Superfood Bohnen - Die ganze Doku | ARTE
