INCREASE celebrates World Pulses Day!
Today, as every year on 10th February, we recognise and celebrate the importance of pulses as a global food. Pulses are the dry, edible seeds of plants in the legume family. They are a category of superfoods including chickpeas, lentils, lupins, dry peas and beans.
Pulses are incredibly sustainable and contribute to a healthy environment. They have a low carbon footprint, due to their ability to create their own fertilisation by pulling nitrogen from the air and into the soil. Moreover, their tolerance of drought stress and their adaptation to semi-arid conditions makes them a true water saver: Pulses use just one-tenth of the water of other proteins.
Legume species play an important role in the global agricultural production. These species are the basis for improving agrobiodiversity and sustainability of agricultural production systems. Additionally, pulses are a good source of plant-based protein as well as dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals such as iron, potassium, magnesium and zinc. And they are yummy!
If you love pulses like we do, we invite you to join the INCREASE Citizen Science Experiment and leave your mark in preserving agrobiodiversity by growing old bean varieties! Interested citizens can register via the “INCREASE CSA” app until 28 February 2023.
Join us! Give agrobiodiversity a chance!
